The Restaurant Opportunities Center yesterday released their 2013 National Diners’ Guide. It includes detailed information on wages and benefits (including whether employees get paid sick-leave) for the top 150 most popular chain restaurants (and some additional local restaurants who’s employment conditions have been reliably verified (e.g. Homegirl Cafe and Catering in Los Angeles). It has a great map-interface which shows restaurants that have decent working conditions in green, and those that don’t in red. Unfortunately, far far too many red pins on the map in Los Angeles!! (and elsewhere).
There is an option for users to share their experience on twitter, facebook, and/or email, and a request that consumers get involved–by telling the manager/owner that as a consumer you care that restaurant workers earn a living wage, receive paid sick days, and have equal opportunity for advancement.
I’d love to see this evolve into something that includes a consumer rating and comment system (maybe eventually be able to replace YELP!), though keeping the information on working conditions separate–to ensure reliable verification.
Congratulations to ROC on a great innovation! Spread the word!!
